UI design portfolio: Early Web projects

Hal started Interaction Design, Inc., when commercial use of the Web was beginning. He worked on many early applications, some of which are shown here.

One of the first e-commerce systems (1996). Design and paper usability testing for one of the first order-form interfaces for e-commerce, based on catalog order forms. We learned a lot about the user's model of e-commerce; not surprisingly, it was based on shopping in stores.
Networked printer management (1997). Design and usability testing for one of the first networked printer systems. It allowed remote reporting and monitoring and used a clear visual language so people could check status while walking by.
An online magazine (1998). An expert review of an early version of Boston.com before a site redesign resulted in enhanced readability and usability.
Search engine strategy(1999). A usability study that studied search strategy at DirectHit.com in the early days of searching. The study resulted in improved usability and uncovered some interesting search strategies.
Voice over IP phone (2000). Design and paper usability testing on one of the first VoIP telephones. It included a Palm screen with external buttons. The team included industrial and graphic designers; we did full user experience design along with paper usability testing.
Print-this-page design (2001). An expert review of a cooking site included recommendations to remove navigation and improve the printable page to make recipes more useful in the kitchen. This is common now, but a new idea then.
An early HTML editor (2002). This included many features not then in other editors, like selecting columns (not an actual HTML concept) and specifying Web-safe colors.
Medical office software (2003). An early program for physicians to use during office visits, actually done before the Web was prevalent.
