A newsletter sign-up form is only as good as the list it builds. Without verification, any address can be submitted, and a list full of typos, bots, and fake entries will damage deliverability from day one. Double opt-in fixes that. Every new subscriber receives a confirmation email with a unique verification link. Only those who click confirm are added to the list, with their consent recorded and their profile activated for email communication. The system also handles edge cases: contacts who are already subscribed get a polite acknowledgment instead of a duplicate entry. Combined with the Email Subscription Management use case, every consent state change is tracked and synchronized across the database in real time.
A visitor fills in the newsletter sign-up form. The Send opt-in event fires and Unsubscribed from emails is set to FALSE. The system checks whether they are already subscribed. If they are, a short, polite email acknowledges the attempt and nothing else happens. If they are not yet subscribed, a confirmation email goes out with a unique verification link. The visitor opens the email, clicks the link, and lands on the confirmation page. Whether the click is tracked via the email action or the page visit, both routes trigger the same outcome: Consent email is set to TRUE, the contact is added to the Newsletter list, and a welcome email is sent. The subscription is complete, the consent is recorded, and the contact is ready for communications.
Subscription trigger and initial setup: When a contact fills out any newsletter sign-up pop-up or form, the Send opt-in event fires. The system also sets Unsubscribed from emails to FALSE, which unblocks email delivery for contacts who may have previously unsubscribed but decided to sign up again.
Already subscribed handling: The system checks whether Consent email is already TRUE. If it is, a short acknowledgment email is sent letting the contact know they are already on the list. No duplicate entries are created, and the existing subscription remains unchanged.
Confirmation email with verification link: For contacts not yet subscribed, a confirmation email is sent containing a unique verification link. The link includes a contact identifier and the opt-in=true parameter to reliably identify the click in the automation. The CTA leads to a dedicated confirmation landing page.
Dual-trigger verification: The confirmation step listens for both the Email Action click and the Page Visit to the confirmation URL. Both triggers are used because some inbox providers block click tracking data. This dual approach ensures every verified subscriber is captured regardless of their email client.
Consent update and welcome email: Once verification is confirmed, the system sets Consent email to TRUE, adds the contact to the Newsletter list, and sends the welcome email. The subscription is fully complete with consent recorded and the contact ready to receive future communications.
