AI Overviews just launched in France: how to stay visible and stop losing qualified visitors

Summary

On July 22, 2026, Google activated AI Overviews and AI Mode in France. Search results for many queries now start with a summary generated by Gemini, which sits above the classic SERP and cites 3 to 4 sources on average.

In the US, where AI Overviews has been rolling out since 2024, the feature already triggers on around 48% of tracked searches (BrightEdge, February 2026). The consequence is twofold: fewer organic clicks, but more qualified visitors when they land on your site.

This creates two challenges that compound each other:

  • Becoming visible in these new interfaces, where the 3 to 4 cited sources are selected based on precise editorial criteria,
  • Converting a visitor who arrives with sharper intent and lower tolerance for friction.

This is exactly what our white paper "AI Overviews and AI Mode arrive in France: the guide" breaks down: the concrete mechanics to activate, with data to back it up. No form, no data required.

What actually changed on July 22

Google activated two distinct features in the same rollout, which are often confused.

AI Overviews is a summary generated by Gemini that appears at the top of the SERP. The ten organic results remain visible below. The summary cites 3 to 4 sources as links and captures a growing share of attention before the first scroll.

AI Mode is a fully conversational search mode, accessible via a dedicated button to the right of the Google search bar. It replaces the SERP with a dialogue. Users refine their query through successive questions, similar to ChatGPT or Perplexity.

The French rollout follows a letter Google sent to French press publishers on June 29, 2026, first reported by Ouest-France. France was one of the last major markets without native access to AI Overviews.

The real challenge isn't the drop in CTR

US studies confirm the mechanical drop in organic click-through rate: -47% when an AI Overview is present (Pew Research Center, July 2025, on 68,879 searches), and -58% on Position 1 (Ahrefs, December 2025, on 300,000 keywords).

These numbers are real. But taken alone, they steer marketing decisions in the wrong direction.

Because the traffic that remains is not the same as yesterday's traffic. A visitor who clicks after reading an AI summary already has part of the answer. They don't click to discover, they click to validate or dig deeper. Their buying journey is more advanced by the time they land.

The result: fewer visitors, but each one counts more. This new equation is what redefines a significant part of marketing work going into the fall.

Visibility: the selection happens in your first 100 words

According to the Positive Surfer study, which analyzed more than 650,000 AI-generated responses across the main generative engines, 84% of the sources cited by AI Overviews are already present in the organic SERP for the query. Google doesn't dig through hidden corners of the web: it composes its summary primarily from pages that its own ranking systems have already surfaced.

But ranking isn't enough anymore. Out of the 10 organic positions available, only 3 to 4 make it into the summary as cited sources. 80% of those citations come from the top three positions.

The selection within the top 10 comes down to three factors that weigh heavily:

  • Search intent alignment with the actual query (22% of the weight, according to Surfer),
  • Early query confirmation in the first sentence (22%),
  • Early query answer delivered upfront, before elaboration (19%).

These three factors all measure the same thing: what your first paragraph does. Your introductions have to be built as concentrated units of citable information.

Conversion: the click isn't enough

A visitor arriving from an AI Overview or from AI Mode has just been through a personalized conversational experience. They will not tolerate a generic experience in the seconds that follow.

Three concrete initiatives on the site side:

  • Dynamically adapt your welcome to observed behavior: hero banner, featured products, social proof. Context has to show up in the first seconds.
  • Identify the source of this new traffic. Google Analytics poorly categorizes visitors coming from LLMs: a click from ChatGPT often shows up as "direct", and a visitor from AI Overviews is buried in classic organic traffic without distinction.
  • Bet on retention. When acquisition becomes more expensive, Customer Lifetime Value becomes the variable that preserves profitability.

What you'll find in the white paper

Across 34 pages, the guide covers:

  • What was precisely activated on July 22, with no confusion between AI Overviews and AI Mode,
  • How to get cited, based on the 20 factors measured by Positive Surfer for each engine,
  • The new post-AI visitor profile, with a comparative table between 2021 and 2026,
  • The three concrete initiatives to launch on the site side,
  • The five habits to adopt now to prepare for the fall.
